According to The Guardian report monkeys such as gorillas, chimpanzees and bonobos are already endangered. In addition, even today, the habitats of these animals are smaller than in the past.

In the analysis, two different models were made using data on the population, current threats and conservation activities carried out over 20 years from the World Union for Conservation of Nature's apes database. In the first scenario, measures were taken against climate change, loss of habitat and increase in the human population, while in the other no action was taken.

According to the findings published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal Diversity and Distributions, it was predicted that the regions suitable for the animals would disappear 85 percent in the first scenario and 94 percent in the second scenario. Experts think that half of this loss will occur in protected areas such as national parks. Most great ape species prefer plains. However, the researchers note that climate change will make some plains hotter, drier and therefore unsuitable for monkeys.

On the other hand, officials state that some areas will become suitable for these creatures, but animals will not be able to migrate there in time.

Khalmar Kühl, one of the people who signed the research, said:

"All nations that benefit from these resources have a responsibility to provide a better future for the great apes, their habitats and the people living in the region."
